Society's Newsletter September 2011

Following previous successful public meetings, which had attendances way beyond our expectations and showed that residents are very keen to improve the appearance of our villages and district, we have organised another:-

Public Meeting
& AGM at the Red House, Albrighton
Bar Open 7pm meeting starts 7.30pm
Monday 24th October 2011

Speakers will present these two Main Topics:-

Albrighton Station
Will it be closed? Does it need more parking?
The Society has a Proposal to take the Station Building out of dereliction, refurbish it and make it into an Arts & Crafts Exhibition Centre, Arts & Crafts Demonstration Area, Local Museum and a Tourist Information Point. Heritage Lottery fund has given preliminary approval but more planning work to be done. Together with Albrighton PC we have lobbied Network Rail to refurbish the 2 bridges and platforms. Options for increased parking both for the Station and Arts/Crafts/Museum Centre have been reviewed.

Speakers from Shropshire Council to deal with:-
· changes at Shire Hall
· future of Sheldon Court and the Ash Grove Garages
· planning matters (including why planning application meetings are now at Ludlow)
· ownership & maintenance of the Albrighton Village Green access roads
· Conservation Officer to discuss conservation and explain how we can establish
“Local Listing” of notable buildings in our district to provide some protection
· reduced number of LJC meetings – some people see this making SC less accountable

The Society’s other projects may also be discussed including –
o Village Entrances Scheme – to improve the appearance of these first access points
o Hanging baskets and Planters in public places in conjunction with the Flower Show
o Civic Society Awards for Local Schools
o Local eyesores such as:- neglected streets & weed covered pavements, need to paint lamp posts & street furniture,
The Old Smithy, Lea Manor Hotel.
o Civic Society Website.

Question & Answer session and suggestions/contributions from the floor.

We would be pleased to receive any suggestions for topics for the discussion session - either at the meeting, or if sent to us a few days prior to the meeting may allow us to get someone to address the matter more formally.

All residents welcome to attend, we hope to see you there

Part of the meeting will be the Annual General Meeting of the Society where a new committee (and its Officers: Chairman, Secretary & Treasurer) will be elected. Nominations for the election of Officers and Committee Members shall be sent to the Secretary (Elwood House, Cross Rd, Albrighton WV7 3RA) in writing together with the nominee’s written consent at least 7 days before the Annual General Meeting.
